All are invited to attend a refugee resettlement seminar on Sunday, March 5th beginning at 2:30 pm at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 121 Church Street, Phoenixville.
About the presenter: The Rev. Sturgis Poorman is a native of Ardmore, PA. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1970 and served churches in West Hebron, NY, Harare, Zimbabwe, and even right here in Phoenixville. He was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Phoenixville from 1987 to 1999. In 1999, Rev. Poorman founded Welcoming the Stranger, an education ministry with immigrants and refugees in Lower Bucks County. Since that time over 3000 adult students from 100 different countries have benefited from this program. After his retirement in 2015, Rev. Poorman began volunteering with refugee resettlement programs in the Philadelphia area. He currently gives his time to Bethany Christian Services, one of the four government approved area refugee resettlement agencies. Recently, in his role as Parish Associate at Ardmore Presbyterian Church, Rev. Poorman has helped to develop “First Place”, a transitional home in Ardmore for newly arrived refugees to the U.S. Rev. Poorman lives in Bryn Mawr with his wife, Joanne. They have two grown sons, Aaron and Garth, and four grandchildren, Marco, Ivan, David, and Abby.
